Spicy fried shrimp recipe

This recipe is my own take on the fried shrimp recipe I used to eat from a street merchant growing up. 

For the sake of keeping it gluten free (no I am not the one who's gluten free in my household), I substituted cornstarch for the flour. 

Also, the garlic and chopped piment bouc are my own addition. Feel free to omit them should you wish to. These shrimp are even better served with a spicy Haitian pikliz.

  • 1 lb of shrimp shell on
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 chopped piment bouc
  • 2-3 garlic heads chopped
  • Lime for garnish
  • Pikliz on the side
  • Oil for frying


  1. Make a small incision in the shrimp shells to devein them making sure not to take the shell out
  2. Rinse with water
  3. Season with salt and pepper
  4. Toss in the cornstarch
  5. Heat some oil in a pot until sizzling hot
  6. Drop the shrimp in the hot oil and fry until golden
  7. Remove from the oil. Place on a paper towel to drain the excess oil
  8. In a pan, fry the chopped garlic
  9. Toss in the chopped habanero pepper
  10. Mix in the shrimp
  11. Serve with some pikliz and lime slices on the side
